Statutory redundancy pay

—
  • Weeks' pay—
  • Weekly pay used—
  • Years counted—

This is the legal minimum. Your contract may give you more.

Your years, counted back

Each full year of service, counting back from the date you're made redundant, earns weeks' pay by the age you were for the whole of that year:

The rules (England, Scotland and Wales)

  • You need 2 years or more with your employer to qualify.
  • For each full year of service you get: half a week's pay for each year you were under 22, one week's pay for each year you were 22 to 40, and one and a half weeks' pay for each year you were 41 or older.
  • Only the last 20 years count.
  • Weekly pay is capped. If you were made redundant on or after 6 April 2026, it's capped at £751, so the most you can get is £22,530.

How it's calculated

For each of your last full years of service (up to 20): aged 41 or over for the whole year → 1.5 weeks aged 22 to 40 → 1 week under 22 → 0.5 weeks Redundancy pay = total weeks × weekly pay (no more than £751)

Worked examples

Age 45, 10 years, £600 a week: 4 years at 41–44 × 1.5 = 6 weeks; 6 years at 35–40 × 1 = 6 weeks 12 weeks × £600 = £7,200.00 Age 30, 8 years, £900 a week (capped at £751): 8 years at 22–29 × 1 = 8 weeks; 8 × £751 = £6,008.00 Age 24, 5 years, £400 a week: 2 years at 22–23 × 1 = 2 weeks; 3 years at 19–21 × 0.5 = 1.5 weeks 3.5 weeks × £400 = £1,400.00 Age 62, 25 years, £800 a week: only 20 years count, all at 42–61 × 1.5 = 30 weeks 30 × £751 = £22,530.00 (the maximum)

What this calculator doesn't cover

  • Northern Ireland, which has different limits. See nidirect: redundancy pay.
  • Extra redundancy pay in your contract (enhanced redundancy), notice pay, and pay for holiday you haven't taken.
  • Tax. Statutory redundancy pay under £30,000 isn't taxable, but other parts of what you're paid when you leave, such as holiday pay and unpaid wages, can be. See GOV.UK: tax and National Insurance on redundancy.
  • Whether you're really redundant or were chosen fairly. Acas gives free advice on this.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as weekly pay?

Your average pay before tax over the 12 weeks before the day you got your redundancy notice. If your pay varies, your employer works out the average. If you work regular hours, it's usually your normal weekly wage.

Why does the age for each year matter?

The law gives more for years worked when you were older. A year only counts at the higher rate if you were that age for the whole year, which is why the table uses the age you'd reached at the start of each year.

Can I get less than this?

No. Statutory redundancy pay is the legal minimum if you qualify. Your employer can pay more, and your contract may promise more.
