How to use this calculator
- Enter your hourly rate before tax.
- Enter the hours you're paid for each week and how many days you work.
- Enter your paid weeks per year. Freelancers aren't paid for vacation, so use the weeks you actually work.
How it's calculated
Worked example
Jordan earns $30 an hour for 40 hours a week, 5 days a week, and is paid for all 52 weeks.
If Jordan were a freelancer who worked 46 weeks a year instead, the same rate would give $55,200 a year, before tax and expenses.
Quick rule: for a full-time job paid all year (40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours), double the hourly rate and add three zeros for a rough yearly figure. $30 an hour is about $60,000 a year. Freelancers should use our hourly rate calculator instead, because this shortcut ignores tax, expenses and unpaid time.
Frequently asked questions
How many working hours are in a year?
A full-time year of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. With 37.5-hour weeks, common in the UK, it's 1,950 hours. Freelancers usually bill far fewer hours than this once time off and admin are taken out.
Why is my monthly figure not four times my weekly pay?
Most months are a little over four weeks long. There are 52 weeks in a year but only 12 months, so an average month has about 4.33 weeks.
Is this before or after tax?
Before tax. Your take-home pay depends on your country, state or region and personal situation.
