How to use this calculator

  1. Add a row for each part of your grade, such as homework, quizzes, exams and projects.
  2. Enter each part's weight as a percentage of the whole course. You'll find these in your syllabus.
  3. Enter your score in each part as a percentage. Leave it empty if it hasn't been graded yet.
  4. Read your grade so far. It only counts the parts you've been graded on.

How it's calculated

Points for a part = weight × score ÷ 100 Grade so far = total points ÷ total weight of graded parts × 100

Dividing by the weight of the graded parts (not by 100) gives your average on the work done so far. Once every part has a score, the weights add up to 100 and this is your final course grade.

Worked example

Jordan's course is graded on homework (20%), quizzes (15%), a midterm (25%), a project (15%) and a final exam (25%). The final hasn't happened yet.

Homework 20 × 92% = 18.40 Quizzes 15 × 85% = 12.75 Midterm 25 × 78% = 19.50 Project 15 × 88% = 13.20 Total = 63.85 points out of 75 Grade so far = 63.85 ÷ 75 × 100 = 85.13%

Jordan's grade so far is 85.13%, with 25% of the course (the final) still to come.

Frequently asked questions

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

That's fine while some work is still to come: the calculator averages only what you've entered. If the weights add up to more than 100%, it warns you, because the syllabus weights have probably been typed in wrong.

My course uses points, not percentages. What do I enter?

Turn each part into a percentage first: points you earned ÷ points available × 100. For the weight, use the share of total course points that part is worth.

What letter grade is my percentage?

Grade boundaries differ between schools, colleges and even courses, so check your syllabus for the scale your course uses.
