How to use this calculator

  1. Type your start and finish times for each day you worked. Use the 24-hour clock (17:30) or am and pm (5:30pm).
  2. Add your unpaid break for each day, in minutes. Leave it empty if you didn't take one, or if your breaks are paid.
  3. Enter your hourly rate to see your pay. If overtime starts after a set number of hours in the week, add that and the overtime rate.
  4. Copy the timesheet to paste it into an email, a spreadsheet or an invoice.

How it's calculated

Hours for a day = finish − start − break (add 24 hours if the finish is before the start) Hours for a week = the days added together Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60 (7 h 30 min = 7.5 hours) Pay = normal hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × overtime rate

Worked examples

9:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break = 8 h 00 min = 8.00 hours Five days like that at $25 an hour = 40.00 hours → $1,000.00 Night shift 22:00 to 06:00, 30-minute break = 7 h 30 min = 7.50 hours 8:15 to 16:45, 45-minute break = 7 h 45 min = 7.75 hours 45 hours at £18, overtime after 40 at 1.5× = 40 × 18 + 5 × 27 = £855.00

Frequently asked questions

Why is 7 hours 30 minutes shown as 7.5?

Pay is worked out on decimal hours, where 30 minutes is half an hour (0.5), not 0.30. Both are shown, so you can use whichever your client or employer asks for.
