Tap a tile in the same row or column as the gap to slide it. Tiles already in the right place turn green.

How to play

  1. The goal: put the numbered tiles in order, left to right and top to bottom, with the gap in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap a tile next to the gap to slide it in. Tap a tile further along the same row or column to slide several tiles at once.
  3. On a keyboard, click a tile first, then use the arrow keys: each press slides the tile beside the gap into it.
  4. Try for fewer moves. Sliding several tiles at once counts as one move.

Every puzzle can be solved

Only half of all possible tile orders can be solved. If you swapped two tiles by hand, for example, the puzzle would become impossible. To avoid that, we start from the solved puzzle and mix it with hundreds of random slides, so the order you get can always be put back.

Worked example: the solving method

Most people solve the 4 × 4 puzzle a row at a time:

  1. Top row: place tiles 1 and 2. Then bring 4 under the spot where 3 goes, put 3 in the corner, and slide both into place together.
  2. Second row: do the same with 5, 6, 7 and 8. Once two rows are done, never move them again.
  3. Last two rows: solve them a column at a time from the left: 9 and 13, then 10 and 14, then 11, 12 and 15.

Tips

  • Start with 3 × 3 to learn how tiles move around each other, then try 4 × 4.
  • Move the gap, not the tile. Think about where the gap needs to go to push a tile one step closer to home.
  • The last two tiles of a row are always the tricky part. Line them up one below the other, then rotate them in together.
