How to crop a picture
- Choose your picture, or drag it onto the box.
- Pick a shape, such as Square for a profile picture, or Free to crop any way you like. Turn or flip the picture first if it's the wrong way round.
- Drag the box over the part you want to keep, and drag its corners to change its size. You can also type exact numbers in pixels.
- Press "Crop", check the preview, and download.
How the shapes work
A shape (aspect ratio) is width compared with height. 1:1 is a square; 16:9 is 16 units wide for every 9 high, like a widescreen TV. When you pick a shape, the box starts as large as fits inside your picture, in the middle:
Worked example
A phone photo is 4,032 × 3,024 pixels (a 4:3 shape).
Frequently asked questions
Does cropping lower the quality?
The pixels you keep aren't made any smaller or bigger, so they stay as sharp as the original. Saving as JPG or WebP leaves out a little fine detail; keep the quality at 90% or above, or choose PNG, if that matters.
Which shape should I use for social media or a profile picture?
Square (1:1) works for most profile pictures, and 4:5, 16:9 and 9:16 are common shapes for posts and stories. Each site sets its own sizes and changes them from time to time, so check the site's help pages if it matters.
Can I make the cropped picture a set size, like 400 × 400 pixels?
Crop it to the shape you want here, then use our Resize Image tool to make it exactly 400 × 400.
Are my pictures uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your own browser, and we never see your picture. The new picture doesn't copy over hidden details (EXIF data) such as the GPS location.
