How to use this resume builder
- Fill in your details. The preview shows an example until you start typing, then it shows your own resume as you go.
- Write your personal summary and key skills, then add your work experience, most recent first. Paid and unpaid work both count.
- Add at least two referees, after asking them, or choose "Referees available on request".
- Download the PDF. We don't keep a copy, so press Save draft if you want to edit it again later.
What goes on an Australian resume
This builder follows the resume template and tips from Workforce Australia, the Australian Government's employment service.
| Part | What Workforce Australia suggests |
|---|---|
| Contact details | Your name, suburb, state and postcode, mobile number and email address. |
| Personal summary | Your elevator pitch: why you're a good fit and how you'll help the business. Tailor it for each job. |
| Key skills | Technical, workplace and people skills that are relevant to the job. |
| Work experience | Paid and unpaid experience that's relevant, most recent first, with a short overview and your key responsibilities. |
| Qualifications and certificates | Things like a driver licence or first aid certificate, as well as your education. |
| Referees | At least two people who can support your application: name, job title, business, how they know you, and phone and email. Always ask them first. |
| Length | Usually 1 to 3 pages, depending on your experience and study. |
| Never include | Your date of birth or your bank or credit card details. |
Never put your tax file number on your resume. You don't need it to apply. The builder warns you if it spots something like a TFN or a date of birth.
How the builder lays out your resume
Your name goes at the top with one line of contact details. Then come clear headings: Personal Summary, Key Skills, Work Experience, Education, Qualifications and Certificates, Achievements and Referees. Empty sections are left out. Everything is in one column on A4, and the PDF contains real text that employers' software can read.
Worked example
Chloe Walker is a retail supervisor in Parramatta, NSW, applying for assistant store manager jobs. Press Load example above to open her resume. It has a personal summary, seven key skills, two jobs with a one-line overview each, a Certificate IV and her HSC, three certificates, an award and two referees. With standard spacing it runs just over one page; with Compact spacing it fits on one page.
Chloe lists her RSA and first aid certificates in their own section so an employer can see them at a glance, and she has asked both of her referees before adding their details.
Tip: tell your referees which job you've applied for and what the employer is looking for, so they're ready if they get a call.
Frequently asked questions
Is this resume builder really free?
Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on downloads. The site is paid for by advertising and affiliate links on other pages, never by charging for your resume.
Do you see or store what I type?
No. Your resume is built and turned into a PDF by your own browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or saved on your device, including your referees' details. When you close the page it's gone, unless you press Save draft, which downloads a file to your own device. You can open that file here later to carry on editing.
How many referees should I include?
Workforce Australia's template suggests at least two who can support your application, such as a current or recent manager. Ask each one first. If you'd rather not list them yet, choose Write "Referees available on request".
How long should my resume be?
Workforce Australia says usually 1 to 3 pages, depending on your experience and study. The preview counts your pages as you type.
Can I get a Word version?
Not yet. If an employer asks for Word, press Copy as text and paste into Word or Google Docs, then save it as a .docx file.
