How to edit or remove PDF properties
- Choose your PDF. You'll see its current title, author and the other properties stored inside it.
- Edit the boxes, or choose "Remove all properties" to clean the file before you share it.
- Press "Save PDF" and download the new copy.
What are PDF properties?
Most PDFs carry hidden details about themselves, often called metadata. You can see them in your PDF reader under File → Properties. They often include:
- Title, subject and keywords, which readers and search tools may show.
- Author, which is often filled in automatically from the name on your computer account.
- Created with and PDF made by: the names and versions of the apps used.
- Created and last changed dates, to the second.
Many PDFs also hold a second copy of these details in a format called XMP. This tool removes that copy whenever you save, so old values can't stay hidden in the file.
Example
A report exported from a word processor has these properties. "Remove all properties" clears every one of them:
What this tool doesn't change
- The pages themselves: text, pictures, links and forms stay exactly as they were.
- Names or details written on the pages, or inside comments, attachments and pictures (for example, camera details in a photo). Check those separately before sharing a sensitive file.
Frequently asked questions
Why remove metadata before sharing a PDF?
The author name, app names and exact dates can reveal more than you mean to, such as who wrote a document, when, or that it started life as an old draft. Removing them shares only what's on the pages.
Does editing the properties reduce quality?
No. Only the properties change. Every page is kept exactly as it was.
Why can't I change my PDF?
If the PDF has a password or security settings that stop it being changed, this tool can't edit it. Remove the protection in the app that made it first (you'll need the password).
